Overview & Highlights

Nestled along the picturesque waterfront at 411 Great Loop E Dr in Ottawa, IL, Bluegill Boathouse & Marina Bar offers a delightful dining experience that expertly blends fresh seafood with casual marina vibes. Specializing in fish-forward cuisine, this charming restaurant showcases a thoughtfully revamped menu that celebrates the bounty of the waters while catering to diverse palates.

Step onto the spacious patio and you’ll immediately be captivated by panoramic harbor views, the gentle lapping of waves, and a lively ambiance perfect for both intimate dinners and festive gatherings. The outdoor setting, complemented by a white sand beach and occasional live music performances, elevates the experience beyond just a meal—it's a mini getaway for the senses.

The menu is a treasure trove of fresh, vibrant flavors. Start with comforting Clam Chowder boasting a rich, creamy texture that warms with each spoonful, or opt for a salad like the Heritage Cobb—a harmonious blend of mixed greens, smoky Applewood bacon, gorgonzola, and grilled chicken that bursts with layered tastes and textures. For handheld delights, the Smoked Salmon BLT is a standout: wild-caught Scottish salmon paired with crisp bacon and zesty dill remoulade nestled in toasted organic white bread delivers a smoky, tangy, and satisfyingly crunchy bite every time.

If you crave something with a little zest, the Florida Grouper Sandwich with its blackened fish and zippy key lime aioli embraces the subtropical flavors beautifully. The beloved Heritage Burger pleases with a hearty Widman’s Farms beef patty, melted cheddar, and caramelized onions, making it a comforting yet refined choice.

Don’t skip dessert here—the Crème Brulee Donuts offer a luscious twist on traditional flavors, delivering a crisp sugar crust and pillowy interior that seem to melt on the tongue, while the Chocolate Lava Cake oozes decadence, perfect for chocolate aficionados. For a classic finish, the Pineapple Upside Down Cake balances sweetness and tang with nostalgic charm.

Patrons consistently rave about the incredible atmosphere and stellar service. Kevin Donovan highlights the great food paired with local craft beers like Tow City by Obscurity Brewing, making each visit a sensory celebration. The materialization of casual coastal vibes with touches like a tiki bar and live music on the sand beach creates a vibrant backdrop for memorable outings. Several guests soak in the energy of the harbor-side patio, underscoring the perfect marriage of setting and fare that Bluegill Boathouse delivers time and again.

While a few mixed reviews note some hits and misses on certain dishes, the overall experience is enriched by attentive staff, a welcoming atmosphere, and menu items that cater to both adventurous seafood lovers and fans of classic American comfort food. Whether you’re craving a light and fresh salad, a bold sandwich, or a sweet indulgence, Bluegill Boathouse & Marina Bar invites you to savor every bite while basking in scenic waterside warmth.

For those visiting Ottawa seeking a destination where fresh flavors meet waterfront charm and spirited hospitality, Bluegill Boathouse & Marina Bar stands out as a must-visit spot that leaves you feeling refreshed, satisfied, and eager to return.

Great food, beers, and views! Love the Tow City beer by Obscurity Brewing and the Italian beef fries. The Sand Bar is a blast too, white sand beach with sound stage and tiki bar.

What they lack in food quality they make up for with views....fries were great! Pulled pork sando...not so much

Bluegill has been closed the last week and just reopened under a new general manager. The menu has been completely revamped and is fish and seafood forward. I had a Cobb salad and my daughter had Scottish Salmon with pumpkin risotto. Both were excellent. Bruschetta for an appetizer and cheesecake for desert did not disappoint!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had an amazing experience at Bluegill Boathouse & Marina Bar! The food was absolutely delicious — we tried the Bahama Buffalo wings (so flavorful with the perfect kick), the baked goat cheese (a must-have!), and a fresh side salad topped with their homemade blueberry dressing, which was such a unique and tasty touch. The spicy margaritas were another highlight — infused with cucumber tequila and served with a tajin rim, they were super refreshing and had just the right amount of heat. We sat outside overlooking the boats at the marina, which made for a beautiful and relaxing setting. Shawna was our server and she was outstanding — friendly, attentive, and really made us feel welcome. Can’t wait to come back! Highly recommend this spot for great food, drinks, and views!

We’ve been here maybe 7 times now over the past 4 months and we love it. Good service, love the atmosphere of the patio overlooking the harbor (never have sat inside), and we’ve loved all the food. My fiance always gets the lobster roll and loves it (even though it’s cold), we LOVE the fries, and I’ve tried a few different things - the salads, the wraps, the pork sandwich, sliders, and all the apps have been great (the apps change too - we’ve had crab dip and baked goat cheese). Also shoutout to Gabi! She was our server on 4th of July and she was awesome. Very attentive and friendly.

My husband and our friends went on a road trip to Ottawa. We were looking for places to eat so we tried it out. The service was amazing and the food was excellent. They played a variety of music on the juke box and the prices were good for the great food we had. I had the pulled pork with the arugula salad with pickled green onions. The fries were to die for. If I'm ever back in Ottawa again, I'm going back.

Went to hear my friends Band play there yesterday. Nice Venue. There's a white sand beach in front of the stage that people can sit in & Children play. The only negative I experienced was how much they wanted to charge for a small plastic cup of Titos Vodka & Lemonade - $8.50 !!!!
